During the First World War, there was a prisoner of war camp on a large area to the east of Mauthausen. Up to 40,000 men – Serbs, Russians and Italians – were imprisoned here. From January 1915, thousands of them died as a result of a typhus epidemic, including up to 8,000 Serbian soldiers. A chapel of the Serbian Orthodox Church is dedicated to her memory, the construction of which, which began in 2016, was completed last Saturday with the inauguration ceremony.
The Serbian-Orthodox Patriarch Porfirije Peri’c led the impressive ceremony, which was also attended by diocesan bishop Manfred Scheuer and former governor Josef Pühringer.
