President Luis Lacalle Pou issued a greeting recorded on the American Jewish Committee Global Forumand highlighted the links between Uruguay and Israel as “historic and unbreakable” after 75 years of relations between the two countries.

“I am more convinced than ever that what counts the most is the greatness of democracy and freedom. And the most important thing is the friendship between the nations that defend and appreciate these values”, said Lacalle Pou in the recorded message that he sent to the YMCA Forum. “Together with the 75 years of Israel’s independence, today we celebrate 75 years of friendship between Uruguay and Israel,” he added.

Uruguay was the first South American country to recognize Israel after the declaration of independence of May 14, 1948; and the fourth nation in the world to do so. Likewise, the country hosted the first Israeli embassy in South AmericaTherefore, relations between the two countries have been close for years and “prior to 1948”, according to the president.

By way of example, he reminded Enrique Fabregat, the representative of Uruguay in the UN, who was a member of the commission of the United Nations who visited Palestine in 1947 and recommended the establishment of a Jewish state. Today, this official is one of the three Uruguayans honored with a street in Israel.

A memory to the communities in each country

Lacalle Pou also recalled the importance of Holocaust Remembrance Day in Uruguay, a celebration to pay homage to the victims of the shoah and honor the refugees who arrived in the country after the Second World War. “Our country welcomed and protected them, and they had the opportunity to restart their lives and contribute to the greatness of our nation,” the president said during the recorded message.

Currently, it is estimated that they are 16,000 Jews living in Uruguay, while some 15,000 Uruguayans live in Israel. “Both the Jewish community in Uruguay, so deeply rooted in the life of our country, and the many Uruguayans who live in Israel, serve as an invaluable bridge that connects the two countries,” said Lacalle Pou, who fondly recalled his trip to Israel with Project Exchange Institute from AJC in 2018.
