Some 531,000 tourists left Uruguay for Argentina between January and May of this year, according to data from the National Institute for Tourism Promotion (Inprotur) from the neighboring country, within the framework of the price gap that is evident between both borders.

The executive secretary of Inprotur, Ricardo Sosa, confirmed in dialogue with Télam Radio that the growth “was of 61% compared to pre-pandemic levels”, that is, the period between January and May 2019. To this movement must be added the movement generated by tens of thousands of families who traveled to Argentina to watch the final of the U-20 World Cup, where the Uruguayan youth team became champion.

Highlighting the statistics, Sosa pointed out that “tourism from Uruguay has not only recovered since 2019, but has grown by 61%” and summarized: “Uruguayans were in first place, with 531,000 tourists who entered from that country in the first five months.” In total, more than three million people attended the neighboring country.

It is worth noting that in the first quarter of this year, Inprotur had specified that more than 256,000 Uruguayans moved towards the neighboring country, which meant at that time an increase in 36% compared to the same pre-pandemic period. In addition, on the long weekend for Labor Day, almost 14,000 Uruguayans left by car for Argentina, as reported at the time by the Ministry of the Interior.
