The Vice President Beatriz Argimón led the act of reparation for crimes against humanity committed during the civil-military dictatorship and admitted that “the State violated the right to know the truth”, by admitting government responsibility in the murders of “Las Muchachas de Abril” and the disappearance of two other people.

In the absence of President Luis Lacalle Pou, Questioned by the relatives of the victims, Argimón assured that the State “has the commitment to find the whereabouts of the disappeared”, at a time when public access to the files of the de facto governments is being debated. Thus, he complied with the sentence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (CourtHR) who sentenced Uruguay for the murders of Diana Maidanik, Silvia Reyes and Laura Raggio, as well as the disappearances of Luis Eduardo González and Oscar Tassino.

The president of the Senate read a document in which she referred to the ruling of the Inter-American Court and stated: “We recognize thatThe State is responsible for the violation of rights, the recognition of legal personality to life, personal integrity and personal liberty provided for in Articles 3, 4.1, 5.1, 5.2, 7.1 of the American Convention on Human Rights”.

Argimón added: “I express the commitment of the State to comply with the sentence and find the whereabouts of the disappeared victims.” In addition, he committed the efforts of the authorities to “investigate, punish and adequately repair violations of human rights committed in this case.”

Relatives of the detained-disappeared questioned the absence of Lacalle Pou

The person who spoke on behalf of the families was Karina Tassino, who highlighted “the will of the State to comply with this sentence”, although he quickly regretted the absence of Lacalle Pou, since, according to what he said, he proposed to carry out the act based on the presidential agenda.

Visibly moved, Tassino recalled “How much have we denounced, how many generations, so that today we have this sentence that tells us that we were right”. In addition, he referred to the body that appeared in the 14th Battalion and questioned how the discovery was made.

“It was not found because of data provided by those who know where they are, nor because of information provided by the State,” he lamented, while stressing that “they found it because of years of work that the team of anthropologists are doing together with the Institution of Human Rights”.
