68% of employed Uruguayans went to work during the last general strike

This emerges from a report by Equipo Consultores, which also showed that 25% were unaware of the measure of force.

The latest report on labor concurrency of Equipo Consultores showed that 68% of Uruguayans with a job went to work during the general strike called for last April 25, while 25% were directly unaware that there was a measure of force of these characteristics.

When analyzing the data from the Labor Monitor, which set out to analyze the perceptions and behaviors of Uruguayans in the face of the last general strike within the framework of the Social Security Reform, it can be seen that, of the universe that did not go to work (32%), only 12% joined the strike, while the remaining 20% ​​did not comply with their employment due to derived issues, such as lack of transportation or having to take care of children or other people in the home).

In this way, with respect to the last study, carried out in June 2021, the number of people who went on strike was maintained, while The number who could not work grew by 3% and the number of employed persons who actually went to work fell by 4%. Meanwhile, when evaluating the average of those who did not work (32%), it is above the average of the indicator in the eight measurements carried out by Equipo Consultores since August 2015.

1 in 4 Uruguayans did not find out that there was a general strike

Another indicator of the Equipo Consultores survey was the level of knowledge of the force measure. In that order, 25% of those surveyed, that is, 1 out of every 4 Uruguayans, said that they did not find out about the strike, a level higher than that registered in the last two measurements (14% and 19%).

In counterpart, 75% of workers admitted having heard something about the strike on April 25, 2023, a number well below 86% registered in the June 2021 measurement and below the average of all measurements.

Two sectors threaten unemployment in the near future

In the last hours, there were several unions that threatened to go on strike. For example, the Federation of Dairy Workers (FTIL) said that the company Trace presented an “inadmissible” agreement to the national government and advanced a possible national strike and a big bang to the plants so that they do not receive milk.

Meanwhile, the Single National Union of Construction and Annexes (Sunca) announced a strike next Thursday the 22nd, the day on which he will go to the offices of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) after a “negotiation deadlock” with the government for a new collective agreement.
