In a meeting held at the Diaoyutai Guest House in Beijingwhere Chinese leaders traditionally welcome high-ranking foreign visitors, Xi said he was very happy to see the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist after three years, and that Gates was the first American friend he met this year.
“I often say that the foundation of China-US relations is on their people. I place my hopes on the American people,” Xi said in a video published by the state chain CCTV. And he added that “with the current world situation, we can carry out various beneficial activities for our two countries and towns, activities that benefit humanity as a whole,” he added.
Gates, who arrived in Beijing last Wednesdaywas “honored” by the opportunity to meet with Xi: “We have always had great talks and today we will have many important issues to discuss (…) It’s very exciting to be back.”.
In a post on his personal blog, Gates said they discussed global health and development challengesas the health inequality and climate change.
