Trials for drug trafficking are more or less the order of the day in the Ried Regional Court. Because of this fact, two defendants recently had to answer in the regional court in Ried. The course of action in this case, however, was unusual and curious. Both the 37-year-old main defendant and the 30-year-old accomplice were detained in Suben Prison at the end of 2022. The 37-year-old has numerous previous convictions and was recently sentenced to six years in prison for property crimes. Behind the prison walls of the prison, the suspect must have made eyes at a pastoral assistant. This smuggled the accused several mobile phones into prison. “The defendant made eyes at the woman for a long time and told her that he wanted to return the favor to her and that he would send her a package, including a Swarovski necklace, to her home address. He also announced that there would be five packs of menthol cigarettes in this package,” says Alois Ebner, spokesman for the Ried public prosecutor’s office.

The accused should have received these cigarettes illegally from the pastor. However, the “coincidence” factor apparently did not play into the offender’s cards. The package, which lacked the name of the recipient, did not end up with the pastor at home, but with another person. This is how the police came into play, because it turned out that the sealed cigarette boxes contained around 250 grams of cannabis resin.

The 37-year-old is a typical fraudster. He feigned feelings for the pastor and promised her a good life after his time in prison,” says the spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office.
After the package with the drugs obviously didn’t arrive, the 37-year-old became nervous. He instructed a 30-year-old fellow inmate and acquaintance to contact an acquaintance so that she could start looking for the missing package containing the drug. Since the police were already investigating at this point, a complaint was also filed against the 30-year-old and charges were then brought.
Two years imprisonment
The failed drug trade has now brought the duo sensitive prison stay extensions. The main defendant was sentenced to two years unconditional imprisonment, the 30-year-old got away with eight months unconditional imprisonment.
For the pastoral assistant, the smuggling of mobile phones in particular has a sensitive aftermath. “The woman has lost her job. She is also threatened with proceedings for abuse of office,” says Ebner.
