The retreat in the idea of the head of state occurs just two days after the casting of the controversial eagle of the German warship was announced at a press conference to be converted into a work of the plastic artist Pablo Atchugarry.

Although Lacalle Pou continues to maintain that the work is “a good idea”, he commented to the media that “if one wants to generate peace, the first thing to generate is union“, he slipped, and indicated that”clearly this has not generated it“, and “it is up to a president to listen and represent”.
The president informed Atchugarry of the cancellation of the sculpture early in the morning, assuring him that “unfortunately” they should give up the original idea, since this is “what most people want.”
What was the conversion of the Graf Spee eagle going to be like?
The bronze eagle, recovered in 2006 in the Silver riveris characterized by having its wings spread and the Nazi swastika in its claws, weighs 350 kilos and measures 2.8 meters long by 2 meters high. With the conversion into a dove of peace, it would become 1.70 meters long.
According to Atchugarry, work had already begun in Uruguay with the initial sketch of the dove, and continued in Italy with the creation of a three-dimensional marble mold of carrara. Then they were going to finish in the country with the casting of the bronze of the eagle, which was going to be the task of a company in Montevideo.
Making the mold took about three months and it was scheduled to arrive in Uruguay in September, so the estimated completion date was November. The place where the work would be exhibited had not yet been defined, although one of the options being analyzed was to locate it in the department of Maldonado, at the point where the ocean meets Atlantic and the Rio de la Plata.
