The consultation report SEG Engineering of Energy Indicators May reported that the year-on-year increase in energy prices fell by 6.3%, however, the price of natural gas increased by 12.2% being the first significant increase of the year in Uruguay, one of the countries with the most expensive energy in the region.
According to the latest report from the energy consultancy to which he accessed scope.com, the most significant increase so far in 2023 was experienced in the month of May with an increase in the value of natural gas of 12.25%. On the other hand, the value of firewood also increased with 0.34%, which is added to the 2.13% received during the month of April in the main source of energy used for heating in the Uruguay.
Despite the increases in prices, so far this year, a 6.3% drop in energy values, compared to the year 2022. Regarding the Index of Industrial Energy Prices (IPEI) an interannual variation of 3.2% downward was registered, while in the Index of Residential Energy Prices (IPER) a drop of 6.7% was perceived in May, being the lowest value since April 2020.
The most expensive energy in the region
Compared to neighboring countries in the region such as Paraguay, Chile, Argentina and BrazilUruguay has electricity, and part of the energy through fuels, which is more expensive, according to the energy indicators of SEG Ingeniería.
Regarding medium voltage industrial electricity, the price in Uruguay per MWh is 136 dollars while in Paraguay it is 39, in Argentina 102, in Brazil 117 and in Chile 143 dollars. Regarding the price of residential electricity, in Uruguay it costs $287 per MWhin Brazil 200, in Chile 209, in Paraguay 56 and in Argentina 61.
Regarding fuels, Uruguay leads in diesel and naft pricesto. As regards gasoline, the price per liter is 1.85 dollars, while in Chile it is around 1.61, in Paraguay 1.25 and in Brazil 1.08 and in Argentina 0.95 dollars. Diesel, for its part, costs 1.47 dollars per liter, while in Chile it costs 1.33 dollars, in Brazil 1.66, in Paraguay 1.51 and in Argentina 1.06 dollars.
Although Uruguay is not the country that has the most expensive Fuel oil, Natural Gas and LPGIt is one of the most expensive. The price of Fuel Oil is led by Brazil with 1.0 dollars per liter, but followed by Uruguay with 0.84 dollars. As for Natural Gas, the most expensive is the price per liter in Brazil with 2.41 dollars, but Uruguay also follows with 2.22. Lastly, LPG has the most expensive price in Chile with $2.08 per liter and is followed by Uruguay with $1.89.
