Tourist boat missing on way to Titanic wreck

Excursions to the wreck of the legendary luxury liner are as exclusive as they are expensive: it costs up to 250,000 dollars, which currently corresponds to around 229,000 euros “submerge” to the Titanic. In small boats, tourists are transported to the bottom of the Atlantic to catch a glimpse of the shipwreck. Now one of these boats is missing around 600 kilometers off the coast of Newfoundland. The coast guard in the US city of Boston told the British broadcaster BBC on Monday that the vehicle is currently being searched for.

The private company Oceangate Expeditions confirmed that people were on board. “We are reviewing and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely”the BBC quoted from a statement. “Our full attention is given to the crew members on the sub and their families. We are working on the safe return of crew members.” It was initially unclear whether tourists were also on board. According to the BBC, the submersibles can accommodate up to five people: a captain, a maximum of three tourists and an expert.

The dramatic story of the Titanic is well known: in 1912, what was then the world’s largest passenger steamer set sail in Europe. The destination, New York, was never to be reached by the 2,200 people on board. After colliding with an iceberg, the Titanic sank on Sunday, April 14, 1912. The sinking killed almost 1,500 people. The remains of the ship were only discovered in 1985 at a depth of more than 3800 meters. There are now providers of excursions to the legendary Titanic wreck.
