The Estonian world-class tennis player announced her retirement from competitive sport after Wimbledon. At the end of her career at the age of 27, the former world number two is forced to suffer from lumbar disc degeneration in her back.
“This does not allow for full training or further competitions. It is therefore impossible to continue playing at the highest level in such a highly competitive area,” Kontaveit explained on social media on Tuesday.
Kontaveit has won six WTA singles titles in her career and is currently number 79 in the world. The Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon will be played from July 3rd to 16th.
