A Viennese police officer, who apparently ignored the emergency call of a woman who was threatened by her ex with a knife and then stabbed, was sentenced to a fine of 8,000 euros by the disciplinary authority in February, according to “Kurier” – just because of his choice of words “Can it be that you two are a bit stupid?”, because of “rudeness” and because he “behaved absolutely unprofessionally”.
According to the verdict, the officer took the emergency call in January of the previous year. The caller was apparently threatened and needed urgent help, as she indicated that “he” had a knife. While the officer tried to ask for or collect the correct address, only loud screams and noises like laughter could be heard. The officer then asked: “Could it be that you two are a bit stupid?” After that, the conversation was broken off.
Woman threatened by her ex-partner
The woman had been “intercepted” at her home address by her ex-partner, who had been banned from entering and approaching her hours earlier. She managed to call 911. Meanwhile, the partner stabbed the woman several times, injuring her life-threateningly. She barely survived.
Shortly thereafter, a witness reported the event to another official via emergency call, which the previously inactive police officer noticed. When he became aware that he had completely misjudged the first call, he tried to correct his mistake by calling the rescue team himself. According to the disciplinary commission, he recorded the original call with a delay, but the wrong telephone number, namely that of the witness.
“Emotional Slip”
The officer answered that at the end of the phone call he had an emotional slip because a smiling voice could be heard for him. He also stated that he had created a block of operations, but that it got stuck in the site check. After he had notified the rescue service, he created a new block of operations, which also got stuck in the site check. Since his colleague also had a caller for the same official act, he wrote his details in her pad. The phone number was an error on his part.
In case of doubt, the man was acquitted of the accusation that, after the further emergency call had been received, he recognized the seriousness of the situation, but apparently entered the wrong telephone number in the ELKOS emergency block without due but reasonable care, and thereby committed a breach of official duty.
According to “Kurier”, such an incident has no criminal consequences, it was decided ten years ago. In addition, the person concerned should not be punished twice after a disciplinary decision. The official cannot be transferred from the emergency call after a fine if he does not agree voluntarily. In this case, that should have been the case, he no longer works in the state control center.
Attackers sentenced to life imprisonment
The 47-year-old attacker, who attacked his ex-wife after a complaint was filed, was sentenced to life imprisonment in November 2022. The defendant lodged a nullity complaint and appealed. Shortly after the arranged marriage, the Turk “showed the way.” The first physical attack came in 2012 because his wife spoke of divorce. There were repeated beatings and choking attacks, and the man also violently attacked the children.
In 2019, the woman finally filed for divorce, which the man did not accept. Again and again he ambushed the family, observed them when they left the house. The man was turned away twice. On January 6, 2022 – the woman had a new man by her side three years after the divorce – the 42-year-old and her new partner left the apartment to go for a walk when they were waited on by the 47-year-old. After wild threats, the couple alerted the police, the ex-husband was no longer available to the officers. They reached the 47-year-old by phone and issued a ban on entering and approaching him as well as a temporary ban on weapons.
“Wanted to educate woman”
The Turk then got a knife with an eleven centimeter blade and ambushed the woman. Your 911 call was ignored and they hung up. The man stabbed the 42-year-old eleven times, five times in the stomach alone. Shocked eyewitnesses stopped the man from further stitches, alerted rescue and police. A doctor who happened to be present took over the first aid. The woman lost more than a liter and a half of blood and would have bled to death without quick help. The reason for the attack: “I wanted to educate them with it,” said the attacker in court.
