“Due to the danger of the situation, we want to draw your attention to tomorrow’s storm situation today,” Skywarn Austria sent out to its subscribers on Tuesday evening.

The situation is still a bit uncertain, but on Wednesday there is a risk of severe weather in most of Austria – especially in the Alps, in the south and south-east. In Upper Austria, the Salzkammergut and the Mühlviertel are likely to be particularly affected.

High risk of thunderstorms

From the current perspective, strong thunderstorms would form from noon onwards, starting from the mountains and moving east or south-east. The Salzkammergut, parts of Tyrol, Lower Carinthia, all of Styria, most of Burgenland and the south of Lower Austria are classified as a “red warning area” – with a high risk of severe weather. There could be enormous amounts of rain, large hail (more than 5 centimeters in diameter) and heavy gusts of wind. It must also be expected that some places would be hit by several severe thunderstorms within a few hours, which would increase the risk of flooding and mudslides. According to Skywarn Austria, the thunderstorms would last into the night.

However, strong thunderstorms must also be expected in the orange warning areas. This should include the Mühlviertel on Wednesday as well as the Waldviertel region south-east to northern Burgenland, Vorarlberg, East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia. According to Skywarn Austria, heavy rain, hail up to 5 centimeters in diameter and gusts of wind can also occur here.

However, there is said to be a low risk of severe weather in the central area of Upper Austria.
