Cosse accused the MEF of blocking IDB aid for the water crisis

Last week the mayor of Montevideoattended the Brussels Urban Summit (BUS), where experts and politicians from all the various countries participate. There he had several meetings with international organizations and cities from all over the world, specifically Brussels, which were interested in helping the Uruguay at a critical moment in relation to their water reserves.

Faced with this, the Minister of Economy, lily arbelecheresponded with a letter specifying all the government’s actions to try to alleviate the water crisis, highlighting the work of the Ministry of Social Development (Mides) in their role of supporting the population. Then, at the end of the communiqué, he specified that “if deemed necessary” the Uruguayan government will agree to help from multilateral organizations.

The mayor of Montevideo was outraged at the portfolio’s decision. “We had made arrangements with the IDB to access a non-refundable Fund, to be able to continue helping the population and I am outraged because this did not come out of nowhere,” said Cosse and asserted that the MEF’s response is “Blocking the Mayor’s Office in helping the people.”

“Since zero moment, and before, which is not now, we have been publishing information, generating measures, taking bottled water to picnic areas, to our polyclinics, to soup kitchens, to the BPS housing complexes, even to the exits of some schools ”, specified the mayor. On the other hand, she added that the mayor had offered to the National Administration of State Sanitary Works (OSE) a pump with a capacity of 95,000 cubic meters per day to help bring water from elsewhere. “There is no issue that we have left aside in order to help,” said the mayor.
