Pereira demands Heber’s resignation due to insecurity

The president of the Broad Front (FA), Fernando Pereira, considered that the Minister of the Interior Luis Alberto Heberwho will be questioned in the House of Representatives on June 28, “it was exhausted in its own management” and that he should step aside from his position in the government of Uruguay.

The sayings of the opposition referent were given in the framework of the deep criticism that the government faces due to the Security management in the country, and prior to Minister Heber being questioned by legislators regarding this issue.

“I think that He is a minister who exhausted himself in his own management. And a minister who is exhausted, whom people do not believe, should not remain in office. It is not a problem of getting along well or badly with the minister, it is a problem that society no longer believes him,” Pereira said at a press conference, after a meeting with the FA Political Table for the declaration of the water crisis in the metropolitan area.

In this sense, the president of the left-wing coalition stressed that the call to Parliament is not only because of the seven homicides registered between Friday and last Monday, but rather because of the growing concern in society that “in their neighborhoods it is not possible to live in peace.” “That they live in the midst of shootings, that the circumstances are very difficult at the bus stops, the problems in transportation, the lack of certainty of the minister”, he listed.

For Pereira, “it is clear” that Heber “is more concerned about the campaign” of Laura Raffoeventual pre-candidate for National Party for Herrerismo, “than for public safety.” Likewise, and along the same lines, he recalled that the cases marset and Asthesian as major failures of the management of the current minister; as well as his expressions “in a case as serious” as that of the allegations of abuse and sexual exploitation of minors by the white senator Gustavo Penades, without showing the objectivity and impartiality that the situation required.

“You have to have sensible discussions about public safety. And to discuss sensibly is that the interpellation is taken seriously, that the criticism made by the Broad Front of the government is analyzed and answered. That no response be given to previous efforts because the population has already evaluated them. Let it be answered about four years of government”, Pereira commented on his expectations of the coming interpellation.

“The government, at this point, has more things to explain than achievements to show”, he sentenced.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior prepares the presentation of 16 measures to improve security in Uruguay, which will be implemented with or without the support of political parties.

A criticism that is not new

Pereira’s statements after the meeting of the FA Political Table are not new: at the beginning of June he had already requested that the Minister of the Interior resign from his position because the plan to combat insecurity had not worked.

“People are disappointed because they told them about 50,000 homes and they don’t arrive; because they told him that recess was over and between doubtful deaths and homicides last year there was a record and this year it is on the same escalation”, the opposition leader had stated at a press conference during the Broad Front Plenary. Likewise, he highlighted what he considered a paradox: “Minister Heber brought a plan to Lacalle more than a year ago and as a consequence homicides increase”; which is why it was “time for the minister to step aside.”
