The beginning of summer is celebrated with a Fête de la Musique in more than 550 locations worldwide. The streets and squares are left to musicians. Everyone can take part in this music festival, regardless of whether they are amateur or professional musicians, folk music groups or DJs. Public space belongs to music for an evening, and people can listen for free.

The Fête de la Musique was invented in 1981 by the then French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang. The first edition of the street music festival took place in Paris. After that, the Fête de la Musique first conquered France, then cities across Europe and finally the world.

In Austria, Vienna (2021) and Innsbruck (2022) have followed. In 2024, the festival will also be celebrated in all 23 communities of the Salzkammergut Capital of Culture. Eleven of them didn’t want to be taken away from the musical spectacle this year. Tomorrow, Friday, in the evening hours between Scharnstein and Bad Aussee, numerous town centers will be given over to musicians and strolling listeners. In the district capital of Gmunden alone, more than 30 formations have already registered in advance, and no one knows how many more will spontaneously join.

The following communities are participating in the Salzkammergut:

  • Gmunden: Downtown, 5 p.m. – midnight
  • Hallstatt: Marketplace, 8 p.m
  • Bad Ischl: Downtown, from 5 p.m
  • Gosau: Dining, from 6 p.m
