The President of Banco Hipotecario, Casilda Echevarría, He came out to question the project that the government is going to present next month so that they stop paying 2,500 debtors due to the conflict with the loans in Adjustable Units (UR), noting that those debts were “legitimately contracted”.

The initiative was confirmed on Tuesday by the red senator Germán Coutinho, who admitted that they aim for many families not to pay anything and others to continue doing so, but without interest. The text becomes especially important at times when the debt of the Uruguayan families amounts to about 9.7 billion dollars.

When pronouncing on the project, Echevarría was blunt: “We do not share the position of legislators to forgive debts that have been legitimately contracted”. When justifying the payment term of up to 40 years, he said in dialogue with Underlined that “they have been prolonged in time, only because the Mortgage Bank has tried to maintain a quota that these people can pay”.

In addition, he highlighted the low amount of the payment. “By maintaining a quota that sometimes it is even less than a rent, logically that lengthens in time”, said the president of the BHU. In turn, she affirmed: “You can rest easy because the Mortgage Bank can withstand the shock, regardless of the project that is granted to the debtors of UR”.

Echavarría assured that BHU’s heritage “is very strong”

In the middle of a project that contemplates the merger of the BHU with Banco República, Echavarría, who had already expressed criticism against government legislators, stated that the institution’s assets “It’s very strong.” This is how he referred to the statements of Senator Coutinho, who stated that the trigger for the project so that debtors stop paying “is that Banco Hipotecario definitely merges with Banco República.”

The Colorado legislator specified that the measure implies a cost close to 330 million dollars and considered that this effort will mean “a solution” for the affected families. However, he admitted that to materialize the initiative it will be necessary “a very broad political negotiation.” It is that to sanction a measure of this type, two thirds of the vote in Parliament.
