Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf presented a corresponding regulation to Parliament on Tuesday in The Hague. The mobile phone ban is to take effect from next year, and schools are to set up individual rules for this by October.
Especially when students are on social media or using other apps during class, this distracts them from the subject matter. That disturbs the social interaction in the class, it was said as a reason.
The ministry had previously consulted with scientists and representatives of parents and teachers. Everyone involved emphasized that concentration and participation during the lesson were important. Pupils have a right to an optimal learning environment without unnecessary distractions, the ministry said.
