Moscow – Russia announced yesterday that it had neutralized five Ukrainian drones near the capital, an action it blamed on Kiev and which, according to Moscow, would not have been “possible” without the help of the United States and NATO. Ukraine for its part reported several Russian bombings, including one in the Kharkov region, in the northeast of the country, which left 38 injured, twelve of whom were children.
The attack in Russia was aimed at different places in and around the capital region, areas that have rarely been targeted by the actions of the neighboring country.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, four drones were destroyed by anti-aircraft defense near the Russian capital and the fifth was neutralized by “electronic warfare means” before crashing in the Moscow region.
The assault caused no casualties or damage, the ministry added.
“All attacks were repelled by anti-aircraft defense, all detected drones were neutralized,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin celebrated on Telegram.
The action disrupted operations at Vnukovo airport, one of Moscow’s three large international terminals, for three hours.
“These attacks would not be possible without the help provided to the Kiev regime by the United States and its NATO allies,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
According to the ministry, Western powers “train drone operators and provide the necessary knowledge to commit such crimes.”
After the episode, the por-
Spokesperson for Russian diplomacy, Maria Zajárova, denounced on Telegram a “terrorist act” directed against an area “where civil infrastructure sites are located.”
In Ukraine, the governor of Kherson, Oleksander Prokudin, reported on the same social network that two people were killed by Russian artillery shelling in this southern region of the country.
In the Kharkiv region, a Russian bombardment with an Iskander missile caused at least 38 injuries, including twelve children, according to the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office. A three-month-old baby was treated by doctors at the scene of the attack.
There were also three injuries in the Donetsk region (east) and another three in the Chernigov region (north), according to local authorities.
On the front, the fighting continues almost a month after kyiv launched a counter-offensive to recover the territories occupied by Russia, which, so far, has reported only moderate progress.
According to the British Ministry of Defense, the Ukrainian forces are encountering in their attempt to advance with the “massive use of anti-tank mines by Russia” and with air, helicopter and artillery attacks.
Russian forces “have achieved some successes with this strategy” but continue to “suffer significant weaknesses,” he estimated.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on Monday that they had been fighting for a week of “difficult” fighting but that his troops managed to advance 37 km2 in the east and south.
Russia claims that the Ukrainian army “had not reached its objectives in any line” since the start of its counteroffensive in early June.
