The people of Weyr have waited a long time for the construction of their bypass to begin. The road has been pushed forward since June 20, 2022: the traffic relief of the through-road, which in some places appears medieval, is in full swing. Two tunnels, a bridge and two roundabouts will be built by autumn 2025 to make the charming old town on the Enns and Gaflenzbach even more livable and to relieve traffic. But there is still a long way to go and the effort is great.

Thousands of images

For the documentation of the major project, the state road administration has entrusted the Weyrer photographer Konrad Neubauer with the supervision and documentation of the project. Since the start of the construction work, he has been on the construction site in all weathers and records what is happening there. He benefits from the fact that he lives on site and has previously photographed several tunnel constructions.

What sounds exciting can also be dangerous: it is extremely narrow in the tunnel, the machines are huge and the view for drivers and photographers is not always optimal. But Konrad Neubauer has sufficient experience. Together with the two project managers Rudolf Simader and Franziska Obermair, he discusses the upcoming tasks and their safe handling. Personal initiative is also important to him: “If something is going on, I’ll be there, whether it’s a weekday or a holiday.”

His recordings are delivered in sections in larger picture packages every four to eight weeks. “By the end of the project there will certainly be several thousand photos”, Neubauer is convinced. He is also in action for the public guided tours of the tunnel (every Thursday at 2 p.m., by appointment!).

As a bonus to his order, Neubauer will create his proven long-term series, which will be recorded from fixed points of view throughout the construction period. “A time-lapse effect is guaranteed and generates a vivid historical document”Neubauer knows about the effect of these images.
