The sale of still water bottles shot up 573%

This is how it emerges from a Scanntech report on shops in Montevideo and Canelones. Was there a discount after the tax exemption?

In the middle of the water emergency and the increase in the salinity of the supply of SBI, Still bottled water sales skyrocketed 573% during June, compared to the same month of 2022, according to the latest survey of the Scanntech company.

According to the report of the electronic invoicing firm, at general levels the sales of bottled water grew by 360% in the shops of Montevideo and Canelones, in a month in which the water crisis and the reserves of Paso Severino began to be scarce, at the same time that the level of chloride and sodium in the OSE service rose.

The largest increase in sales occurred in bottles of still water, reaching 573% year-on-year. Further back appeared the drums, which had an increase of 269%; and finally the bottles of soda water, that were marketed a 91% more than in June 2022.

Another piece of information that emerged from the report is the greater variety of brands in business. It is that 37% of the stores sold six or more brands, which is equivalent to 12% more than in April and 15% more than in the same period last year.

Did the price drop after the tax exemption?

Scanntech also analyzed the impact of the tax exemption for bottled water, which was voted in the Parliament in the framework of the water emergency. The report reflected that the 86% of businesses complied with the measure ready, with 14% not doing so.

In relation to the reduction that meant for the Uruguayans who went shopping, estimated a 20% drop in the price of two and a half liter bottles, a 24% in those of two liters and a quarter and a 28% in drums.

The initiative to exempt taxes in the midst of the water crisis was validated in Parliament with 64 upvotes and one against and will apply “until the end date of the water emergency declaration.” In parallel, the broad front had proposed that the price is set of bottled water, although that project did not prosper.
