allegations of sexual harassment in the British Parliament

Six female employees revealed to the BBC Newsnight program misconduct and intimidation by executive branch officials and lawmakers.

Employees of the Parliament of United Kingdom denounced sexual harassment by male representatives and officials through flirting and unwanted behavior, within the framework of a “predatory culture” within politics.

Six workers revealed the abuse of power by parliamentarians and senior officials to the program BBC Newsnight. “I He told me to go and sit on his lap. And I told him ‘I’m fine, thank you. I don’t want to,'” said Ellie Varley, a 25-year-old assistant.

The spokesperson for the House of Commons spoke about it and rejected inappropriate behavior by British politicians. In this sense, she assured that complaints are taken “extremely seriously” and that bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct have no place in Parliament.

The employee showed fed up with the number of text messages from other men despite the refusal to an answer. She expressed anger and “fed up” and stated that those who work in Parliament do not feel safe to make complaints. “They have no trust in the system. I’m fed up,” she said.

Conflicts and actions by male deputies does not seem to be resolved despite various sanctions imposed that led to the suspension of several of them.

United Kingdom: the complaints plan in Parliament

In 2018, the UK Congress produced the Independent Complaints and Claims Plan (ICGS) with the aim of condemning attitudes of intimidation or sexual harassment.

The members of the House of Commons assure the same program of the BBC that the complaints system failed to change the predatory culture and is seen as “useless.”

According to the official website of Parliament, “the Independent Complaints and Claims Plan is for all current and former members of the parliamentary community. It is the first of its kind in any parliament in the world and is an important step forward in tackling inappropriate behavior in our workplace.”
