The same questions before every trip: What should I pack? And how much? Japan Airlines (JAL) now has an answer ready: The airline is now lending clothes for the stay. Passengers traveling to the country can reserve the desired wardrobe, the clothes will be delivered to the accommodation. According to the airline, the aim is to provide guests with a “travel experience with minimal baggage”.
“Any Wear, Anywhere” (in German: every piece of clothing, everywhere) is the name of the program that is being carried out in cooperation with the Japanese fashion company Sumitomo. The trial phase is scheduled to last until next summer.
The aim of the initiative is to strengthen sustainable tourism. On the one hand, CO2 emissions can be reduced thanks to the lower cargo loads on airplanes. On the other hand, the ecological footprint of tourists is reduced if they rent clothes that are produced and washed locally. The offer also extends the lifespan of your own clothing, which in turn reduces waste and makes consumption more sustainable. Outfits can be chosen according to the season, height, formality and color palette. In addition, sets are offered depending on the season. The summer set, which consists of three shirts and two shorts, costs the equivalent of 25 euros. The maximum rental period is two weeks.
What’s the point?
Airplanes are among the most climate-damaging means of transport. How much CO2 emissions can be reduced through the rental program is unclear. However, JAL plans to monitor and study the change in weight of passengers’ checked baggage during the 14-month trial.
