How did fuel prices impact the decline in inflation?

The inflation slowed down 0.46% in the month of June, announced the National Statistics Institute (INE), a drop driven by the drop in two of the items that make up the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Food, which is the sector with the highest weighting in the CPI, recorded a drop of 1.31%, followed by the Transportation category, where the reductions in fuel prices decided by the government last month stand out.

According to the breakdown of the INE, the prices in gasoil fell by -7.02% in June while that of the naphtha it did a -2.77%. A reduction in plane tickets of the order of 7.61% is also mentioned.

In June, the government ordered a drop in fuel prices after four months of freezing rates, in line with the recommendations of the Regulatory Unit for Energy and Water Services (Ursea).

The fuel tariff table marked a reduction of 2 pesos for gasoline and 4 pesos for diesel, while the supergas it maintained its same value —as long as a significant gap with respect to the PPI persists.

Last week, meanwhile, the government announced that for this month the values will remain frozen, despite the fact that at one point an increase was analyzed due to a slight upward change in the Import Parity Prices (PPI).

Added to this is the fact that, after the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) favorable to Duchess in the cause of the rate of flammables charged by the Municipality of Montevideo (IMM), the Ancap distribution company noted a drop in prices at its service stations, a path in which they joined Axion and Dyne.

As confirmed by the Union of Nafta Sellers (Unvenu), the liter of Super gasoline cost 69.67 pesos; that of Premium, 71.90 pesos; Diesel 50, 52.87 pesos; and Diesel 10S, 63.18 pesos. This reduction is added to the one already announced and applied during June by the government, and it is likely that it will be considered for the corresponding update in July.
