The senator and leader of Open Town Hall (CA), Guido Manini Rioslaunched strong criticism against the Executive Branch and the partner parties of the Multicolor Coalitionnoting that there is an internal “offensive” and “a plan orchestrated from the Executive Tower” that seeks to “destroy CA” and attack it on a personal level.
The accusations by Manini Ríos against his own partners in the government alliance come after the bill for the restructuring of debts to individuals proposed by his party was rejected by the National Party (NP) and the president himself Luis Lacalle Pou.
“In the PN and in the Colorado Party (PC), there are many who prefer the Broad Front (FA) to win than CA to grow”maintained the ex-military, and accused both traditional parties of not wanting to deal with laws that could destabilize the factors of economic power in the country.
The lobbying leader went further and commented that there is a “media operation” that “looks for any excuse to dirty” to his political force for the “dislike” that he has for the proposals he makes. Along these lines, he slipped that the request to resign from his wife, the former Minister of Housing, Irene Moreiradue to the scandal over the granting of homes without a prior lottery, is part of an attack that comes from the Presidency towards his person.
Cabildo Abierto analyzes going out to collect signatures for the debtors project
For these hours, CA is deciding whether to launch a campaign to sign to reform the Constitution and make the bill viableas it had threatened in the first instance due to the lack of interest of the Multicolor Coalition, or if it will finally give up due to lack of economic and human resources for said logistics.
For such a company, CA would need to collect 10% of the signatures of the electorate to force the plebiscite that would be simultaneous with the 2024 elections. However, this seems to be a very risky bet with so little left before a new election for a party that, according to different surveys, has been losing more than half of the votes it achieved in 2019.
CA seems to have been left alone in the crusade for its bill, since it would not be fully shared by the FA either, despite having presented a similar one, nor would it have generated much enthusiasm within the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU)after a meeting between the president of the governing body, Diego Labat and the lobbyist senator, Guillermo Domenech.
