At the latest when the certificate is distributed and Falco’s “Nie mehr Schule” is played, this means the beginning of the long-awaited summer holidays for teachers and students. Speaking of hot: With temperatures around 30 degrees, a heat wave is also looming at the beginning of the first holiday weekend.
Starting tomorrow, sweating will be outside of the classroom again. While the approximately 195,000 students and 21,027 teachers in Upper Austria say goodbye to the summer break this year, an often stressful time begins for the parents of the children and young people. After all, nine long vacation weeks need to be filled with a program or suitable childcare options found.
Also in time for the end of school, the OÖN have compiled exciting stories about the past school year. For some, the professional career begins at school, for others it ends: 1825 young teachers can look back on their first year of work this year. On the other hand, there are 1184 teachers for whom it was the last year of service before retirement.
The school year from a pedagogical perspective
- Philipp Fellinger has with him Anna Keplinger – outgoing director of the Linz elementary school Tegetthoffstraße – spoken. Ms. Keplinger is an early career changer: Until 1995, the Mühlviertler native from St. Johann am Wimberg worked as a nurse in a hospital. Only then did she decide to do a teacher training course. In her 21 years of service, it was particularly important to her “to give the children a positive attitude towards life and a certain degree of courtesy and respect for other people on their way”.
- Michaela Krenn-Aichinger from the local editorial office in Wels is with us Ferdinand Karer – Director of the Dachsberg High School – review his time as head of the school with almost 900 students: “At first I couldn’t imagine becoming a director. But you can do a lot more than you think.” For Karer, too, today is the last day of school after 35 years as a teacher, 22 of them as director.
- How are those who just beginning their professional life as a teacher or started this school year, Christian Diabl asked the Linz local editorial office. The young teachers he spoke to also confirm that the first year of school is not just something special for the first graders: It is true that prospective teachers do internships and are not in a class for the first time. “But there’s a difference when you’re at the school all the time,” says 25-year-old Axel Kolbeinsson from Linz, who has just spent his first year teaching at BRG Fadingerstraße.
- With David Gruber (26), one of the few male elementary school teachers in the country, has George Steinschnack spoken from the Innviertel. “During my studies there were only twelve male colleagues for every 250 female students,” says Rieder, who was allowed to take on his first class at the Mehrnbach elementary school last September. Gruber is certain that he has found his dream job. When asked about the advantages of his job, he doesn’t have to think long: “Definitely the sense. When I come home from school, I almost always have the feeling that I’ve helped at least one of my students with knowledge or personally”.
