Germany hits record high in incidence rate of new coronavirus cases

The previous maximum mark, of 197.6, was dated December 22, 2020, according to the latest balance of the federal epidemiological surveillance body Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the AFP news agency reported.

This record comes at a time when vaccination in Germany stagnated below 70%, which is why the authorities urge Germans to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

“For the unvaccinated there is a high risk that they will become infected in the coming months,” warned Lothar Wieler, head of the RKI last Wednesday.

In the federal state of Saxony, where the incidence rate is 491.3, more than double the national level, unvaccinated people face new restrictions as of Monday.

Access to restaurants and other indoor events will only be available to people with a full vaccination or who can show proof of recovery from the coronavirus.
