The jury’s verdict of guilty on the charge was unanimous. “They almost killed the man in an overkill,” the presiding judge stated in the verdict.
The maximum sentence – life imprisonment – was only not imposed because the accused had not been blamed and had confessed to the crime, the judge said. The 36-year-old admitted firing the shots, but charged himself with manslaughter. The judgment is not final. Defense attorney Rudolf Mayer asked for time to think, the prosecutor initially made no statement.
