The man was arrested Thursday night in Manhattan as part of the investigation into the so-called Gilgo Beach murders, Suffolk County Police Chief Rodney Harrison said on Friday. “He is currently in police custody.”
Accordingly, an official indictment was expected for the course of the day. According to media reports, the suspect is a New York architect. The mysterious case began in 2010 and kept the country in suspense. While searching for a missing prostitute, investigators gradually uncovered bodies and body parts along the remote stretch of Gilgo Beach on Long Island. In five cases the victims were prostitutes.
The idea of a serial killer roaming the area had terrified everyone. However, the authorities did not subsequently assume that there was a single serial offender. Thomas Spota, the prosecutor responsible at the time, said in spring 2011 that there was “no evidence that all corpses are the work of a murderer”. Rather, the area around Gilgo Beach was “used for some time as a place to store mortal remains”.
It was initially unclear which murders the suspect, who has now been arrested, is charged with. The authorities announced a press conference for Friday afternoon (local time).
