The center of Ulrichsberg (Rohrbach district) narrowly escaped a catastrophe on Saturday. As reported17 fire brigades with around 250 helpers were deployed, including comrades from Breitenberg and Wegscheid in Bavaria and the Oberplan fire brigade from the Czech Republic with a large tank fire engine.
The barn and barn burned down to the foundations
The fire broke out just before 7 p.m. Saturday. As reported by the police, the farmer (53) and his brother (58) had unloaded a load of hay in the barn. Suddenly, the unloading area caught fire.
Only the rapid intervention of the fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading. There was minor damage to the neighboring building, and the emergency services were able to save the home of the affected farm. The adjacent municipal office also remained undamaged. Only the barn and a barn, in which hay had been brought in shortly before, burned down completely.
“Cause clearly established”
The challenge was the evacuation of the cattle. A seriously injured cow had to be slaughtered on site. 20 animals could be saved, some young cattle were injured. The State Criminal Police Office took up the fire investigation. The burned-down barn was inspected on Sunday afternoon. “The cause of the fire was clearly a technical defect in the hay blower,” the police said.
A stroke of luck
Even before the big fire, there were more field fires in the region, which is why farmers were asked to fill their liquid manure tanks with water so that large amounts of water can be used quickly in the event of a fire – a stroke of luck, as it has now turned out: “That has a lot to do with the extinguishing success,” says head of operations Lukas Schauberger. Even a private pool was used for the extinguishing work, and the population was also asked not to use water.
