A warm southwesterly current paired with a foehn wind was responsible for the sweaty temperatures on Saturday. The thermometer climbed the highest in Braunau with 36.5 degrees, in Wels 36.3 degrees were reached.
The highs were followed by a tropical night in which the temperatures did not fall below 20 degrees: in the Innviertel, in Unterach, Bad Ischl and in Linz. But on Sunday morning the wind began to change from southwest to west. The temperatures will therefore be a little cooler, especially in the second half of the week, and the weather will be more unstable. “A low-pressure area hangs over northern Europe, and the Mediterranean region is dominated by a high,” says Claudia Riedl, meteorologist at GeoSphere Austria. Austria is right in between in the “air mass limit”, so storms are also possible.

Monday will be “rather unstable”, clouds will pass in the morning, downpours are possible in the Mühlviertel. Nevertheless, the sun is shining widely with highs of 31 degrees. In the evening there will be rain showers, especially in the Salzkammergut. On Tuesday it will be sunny again with up to 32 degrees, thunderstorms are possible in the evening.
The influence of the westerly wind is most noticeable on Wednesday. At a speed of 50 to 60 km/h, it drives many clouds in front of it. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, with highs of up to 30 degrees. “We stay on the warm side,” says meteorologist Riedl. On Thursday “we will stay in the westerly current”, the temperatures will reach a maximum of 28 degrees. On Friday, “some rain should fall, which we urgently need in Upper Austria”. The weather next weekend should then be “quite passable”, with pleasant temperatures of around 26 to 27 degrees.
