In the remote municipality of Sanbao in northwest China, the temperature rose to 52.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday, state media reported on Monday. The previous high was measured in 2015 at 50.3 degrees in the People’s Republic. The development is fueling concerns that last year’s drought could repeat itself. In 2022, China was hit by the worst drought in 60 years.

Despite serious political differences, China and the USA want to work together to combat global warming. US Special Envoy on Climate Change John Kerry will hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua on Monday. Before negotiations began, Kerry said it was essential to make progress in the four months leading up to the next global climate summit in Dubai. He called on China to cut methane emissions and reduce the climate impact of coal-fired power generation.

Since April, heat records have fallen in several countries in Asia. Climate experts warn that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius will not be achieved.
