Due to the lack of sustained precipitation, the soil of the forests and meadows has dried up to a depth of more than 20 centimeters, the forestry department (MA 49) announced. This greatly increased the risk of forest fires.
Smoking, handling open fire and light and any kindling of fire in the forest are also prohibited, it said. The ban applies until further notice and will only be lifted in the event of sustained rain showers. Climate and environmental councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) appealed to the population to adhere to this. If a forest fire is discovered, the fire brigade should be called immediately on the emergency number 122.
Barbecuing in private gardens outside the danger zone of the forest is still permitted. In view of the drought, the city warns to be particularly careful here as well. The ban in forest areas is strictly controlled by the city’s forestry department and the foresters, it was emphasized.
