After her divorce from her first husband, Bibi did not observe the three-month waiting period prescribed in Islam before her next wedding. Islam is the state religion in the South Asian country.
The couple are reportedly due to appear in a court in the capital, Islamabad, on July 20. The popular opposition leader could be threatened with exclusion from the forthcoming parliamentary elections if the court declares him a “dishonest person,” according to the assessment of the lawyer Imran Shafique in Islamabad to the German Press Agency (dpa). After two divorces, Khan lives in his third marriage with Bibi.
Since the former cricket star was overthrown as prime minister in April 2022 by a vote of no confidence, the judiciary has repeatedly raised new allegations. Observers see political reasons for this. The 70-year-old is hoping for a political comeback in view of the parliamentary elections in the autumn. Last May, Khan was arrested to great publicity, sparking a nationwide riot and the politician’s subsequent release.
