Barely 6% of homes in Montevideo use OSE water for drinking

Due to the water emergency, 94% of people do not use the supply, not even for coffee or mate, according to a Cifra survey.

After the increase in salinity in recent weeks, the 6% of the homes of Montevideo admitted that it no longer uses the water it supplies SBI to drink, while its use for other everyday issues according to a Cifra survey.

The survey showed that two thirds of families of the capital and its surroundings consumed tap water before the water emergency, but they modified their habits from the loss of quality of the supply, which in recent days began to improve.

He 94% that stopped consuming OSE water in Montevideo varies according to the area. For example, in the coastal and downtown area, more than half stopped consuming the service. Meanwhile, inside the situation is different: in the south changed their habits 33% of households, while on the border with Brazil they did the 14% and in the coast just the 9%

The drop in water quality also led to changes in habits. For example, before more than 90% filled the boiler with tap water and today more than 80% do so with bottled water. As for preparing infusions such as mate, tea or coffee, 79% stopped using the OSE supply, which is used by only 14%.

To a lesser extent, 44% began to use bottled water to cook from this situation, while 24% did so to water and 17% for wash the car.

Due to the water emergency, the sale and import of bottled water increased

This situation occurs in the middle of a significant increase in sales of bottled water, a product that recently broke a 10-year import record, according to a report by the UCU.

In the context of the drought, sales of bottled water shot up a 573% in June in Montevideo and the metropolitan area of ​​Uruguay, according to a Scanntech report made after the tax exemption in the sector, voted in the Parliament.
