A shooting left three dead in New Zealand hours before the start of the Women’s World Cup

A man opened fire Thursday at a building in Auckland city center, New Zealandin a “alarming incident” that left three dead, including the attacker, local police said.

“The shooter moved through the building and continued to discharge his weapon,” Acting Police Superintendent Sunny Patel said.

“As soon as he reached the top floor of the building, the man barricaded himself in the elevator shaft and our staff tried to talk to him,” added.

“The man fired more shots and was found dead a short time later,” he concluded.

Police confirmed two deaths so far, in addition to the attacker. He also reported multiple injuries.

Security forces were deployed in “significant” numbers to the site and cordoned off the area, police said, also sending in a helicopter.

Details of the event are still emerging, Patel said.

“What happened is understandably alarming and we are reassuring public opinion that this incident is under control and is an isolated incident,” the officer said.

“We can also report that it is not a risk to national security,” added. The police asked the population to stay away from the place while they investigated the event.

The US women’s soccer team, currently based in Auckland, said in a statement that all players and staff are safe.

Women’s World Cup confirmed

The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Chris Hipkinsassured this Thursday that the inauguration of the women’s soccer World Cup in Auckland remains as planned after a shooting in this city that left two dead, in addition to the attacker.

Police said this shooting in downtown Auckland was an “isolated incident” and Hipkins stressed that there was no threat to national security.
