Two men were arrested on suspicion of theft. Because one of the two already had a lot on his plate, he should be taken to the Graz-Jakomini prison. The other received a “charge at large”. This “report at large” order obliges the police to immediately release the arrested person. There was a mix-up due to language barriers, the visual similarity of the two suspects and the same nationality.

The officers noticed the mix-up shortly after the release, whereupon the person (actually) to be released was immediately released and a search for the accomplice who had been released in error was initiated. So far this has been negative. According to the police, the man poses no apparent danger.

Due to this situation, immediate internal measures were taken, such as raising awareness and a six-eyes principle. In addition, extensive surveys are carried out and processes evaluated in order to minimize the risk of error.
