Abundance begins behind the 140-year-old house of Annemarie (78) and Wolfgang (63) Büchler. So much garden, so many corners, so much to discover: rampant green in all shades presses towards the visitor, the narrow paths separating the areas from each other always reveal new surprises. A metal ladybug sits on a hedge, a smiley protrudes from the hydrangeas, a gnome grins mischievously in front of the trunk of a fruit tree. How many sitting areas have they hidden in their hideaway? Six or seven? The Büchlers have to think about that. After all, it is 2700 square meters near the Wels airfield, on which their oasis extends.

Tombstones and Gnomes
“We moved into the house 28 years ago and I just bought everything I liked and planted it. I had no idea at the time that it would be so big,” says Annemarie Büchler and laughs. She created garden rooms, the Tuscany corner is just as enticing as a shade garden, in the “melancholic” corner old tombstones mark the final resting place of two cats, the water lily pond is one of several water points. “That’s where the frog and the newt live,” says Wolfgang Büchler, addressing a topic that is very important to the couple: the animals. Kestrels breed in one tree, in the 100-year-old nut tree they sometimes see up to 14 pheasants at the same time. Even the paving stones on the terrace are only laid so that the worm can find as much space as possible in the natural garden. “I try not to inject anything – I only take action against the borer,” says Annemarie Büchler. Your garden is a full-time job. “I spend four to five hours just watering every day.” In her green oasis, she sees herself represented: “Gardens are similar to the owner. I’m not a fussy person, so is my garden.”
