This is shown by the figures from 2022 published by Statistics Austria. Accordingly, 31.7 percent of the 81,892 children born alive in Austria were born in this way. “This means that the number of caesarean births has more than doubled in the past 25 years,” says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas. In an EU comparison, Austria is in the upper midfield.
The proportion of Caesarean sections in northern European countries is comparatively low. In Cyprus, on the other hand, more than half of the children are born by Caesarean section. In 1995 “only” 12.4 percent of children in Austria were delivered by caesarean section, ten years ago it was 29.4 percent and now it is 31.7 percent. In a national comparison, Upper Austria has the lowest rate of caesareans at 28.1 percent.
