The Chamber of Commerce and Services of Uruguay (CCSUy) received this Thursday from the undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Mario Ariztithe guidelines for salary increases for the tenth round of negotiations of the Wages Council 2023.

In the negotiations, which began this month and reach up to 600,000 workersthe national government proposed salary increases based on projected inflation from July 2023 to January 2025.

Arizti specified that the increases will be of a 2.8% in July 2023; of the 4.4% in January 2024; of the 1.3% in July 2024; and of the 4.2% in January 2025. In the event that it is necessary, once the adjustments are finished, it will be corrected based on the verified real inflation data.

The Undersecretary of Labor assured that the biggest increases occur at the beginning of the year, because “the first semester is generally the one with the highest inflation because there is an increase in rates.” “The inflation projection for the year 2023 is 6.7% and in 2024 5.8%”held.

The new round of negotiations will include those “affected” by the pandemic

“In this negotiation of the tenth round, all those who in the previous round had been classified as affected are included”said Arizti at a press conference, who in turn stated that those who in the ninth round had been classified as “very affected” will be excludedsuch as companies related to the tourism sector and party organizations.

Some of these sectors were the ones that presented the greatest salary loss in times of pandemic, according to the undersecretary himself, “of approximately 9%”, so the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and the MTSS had to issue specific guidelines for these areas of commerce. These 40,000 workers will be excluded from the current salary round and from the 170 negotiating tables.
