The technical platoon of the Steyr volunteer fire brigade recently celebrated its 90th anniversary. A brief look at history: In 1933, the increase in car traffic and the increase in accidents required a roadside assistance service. This was set up by the city fire brigade as one of the first in Upper Austria on July 17, 1933. His job was to ensure that the fire brigade drove to the scene of the accident with a rescue vehicle when requested to tow the vehicles involved in the accident to a garage.
In 1964, a demolition squad was set up and trained by the Steyr fire brigade. One of the first operations was the demolition of the old water tower on the Ennsleite in 1965. In the 1970s, a call was made for the other fire trucks of FF Steyr to become members of the so-called disaster relief service (KHD). In 1977, work began on converting the property at Industriestraße 1, the current location, into a fire station garage.
The current name came about in the 1980s, and KHD became Technische Zug. There have been flight assistants in the Steyr fire brigade since 1988. Since 2016, the fire brigade has also had its own rescue team. In recent years, the fire station has been further expanded and renovated in sections. (dmf)
