The price in dollars of dairy milk increased by 19% in 2022

The appreciation of the Uruguayan peso caused the payment to producers to be higher when measured in the North American currency.

A recent report from National Milk Institute (inhale) showed that during 2022, the price per liter of dairy milk increased by 13% to 17.1 pesos, but measured in dollars the rise was 19% to 0.42 dollarsmainly due to the appreciation of the Uruguayan peso against the US currency during that year.

The average price per liter of milk with resettlement and weighted by remittance increased 1.9 pesos compared to 15.2 pesos in 2021and 4.6 pesos compared to the 12.5 pesos average of 2020, meaning an increase of 36%.

On the other hand, measured in the US currency, the payment per liter to dairy farmers grew 0.07 dollars on average compared to 2021, and 39% from $0.30 in 2020. In the course of the year, the minimum price was in January with 0.36 dollars, and the maximum of 0.44 dollars in April.

These variations are explained because on December 30, 2022, on the last business day of last year, the dollar closed at 40,071 pesos, representing a decrease in the calendar year from 10.35% compared to the end of the year 2021 in 44,695 pesos.

On the other hand, the shipment of milk to the plant fell by 1% in 2022with a record of 2,089 million literscompared to the 2,119 million reached in 2021 (record of the last decade), and the 2,078 million of 2020.

Regarding the collection of milk, Conaprole monopolized 72% of national production, followed by Estancias del Lago with 9%; Fray Bentos Foods with 3%; Indulacsa-Lactalis with 3%; Pocha Farm with 2%; Claldy with 2%; Trace with another 2%; Gloria Foods 1%; Farming 1%; Urulact 0.6%; and other industries almost 6%.
