At least 800 penguins were found dead in La Paloma

At least 800 penguins found dead on the beaches of Dove and experts specified that they were malnourished, for which they assured that “they are starving” while from the government they ruled out that it is avian influenza.

As indicated by one beach foreman de La Paloma, Pablo Sena, the main theory is that “they are dying of hunger” and, when evaluating a number of affected animals, I consider that “It may be that there are even more than 5,000.”

From SOS Marine FaunaRichard Tesore commented in dialogue with Underlined that this phenomenon “has been taking place in the last three years at least” and, according to experts, the percentage that survives “is minimal”.

“They are all animals very skinny, without food in the stomach, without a single layer of fat. The final death is obviously due to cold, but the cause is not cold”, assured Tesore, supporting the hypothesis of malnutrition.

“Drawing some other conclusions, last week there was a big cyclone that did not hit the Uruguayan coast, but he was in the Atlantic quite strong and that could also be one of the causes that helped make this mortality even higher,” he added.

The government is monitoring the situation.

Echoing this situation, from the Ministry of Environment recalled that “Magellan penguins normally perform migrations from southern Argentina to the Brazilian coast in search of food and warmer waters”. Therefore, they specified that “It is normal for specimens to appear, especially juveniles, on our shores”.

The government ruled out that it is avian influenza, a disease that generates fears in the country, clarifying that “this species has been monitored for months, and up to now negative” and indicated that they will continue with the analysis.

Environment pointed out that “given the increase in the number of dead specimens along the Uruguayan coast, necropsies and new ones were taken samples sent to the official MGAP laboratory”.

On the other hand, they reported “the sudden drop in temperature in oceanic waters, as well as “distinct signs and findings that are being analyzed and that may be part of what is expected in a population that migrates hundreds of kilometers each year.”
