Portugal reestablished random checks on its borders today, before the arrival of Pope Francis and a million young people for the World Youth Days (WYD) at the beginning of August.
This “exceptional” measure, decided to “prevent possible threats to public order and internal security”, will be in force until August 7.
Identity checks at the borders will be “random and not systematic,” Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro said yesterday.
The measure is coordinated with the Spanish, French and Italian authorities, he added, quoted by the AFP news agency.
Portugal is preparing for the arrival of around a million young people from all over the world for the WYD, which will take place between August 1 and 6, in the presence of Jorge Bergoglio.
The meeting was to take place in August 2022, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Francisco, 86 years old and convalescing from an abdominal operation carried out in June, confirmed his presence.
During his five-day stay in Portugal, he will hold twenty meetings and deliver 11 speeches.
