Eleven people died and four others were injured in an intentional fire perpetrated this morning in a bar in northern Mexico, after a man who had been expelled from the premises threw an object with fire, authorities reported.

The incident occurred in an establishment in San Luis Río Colorado, a town in the northern state of Sonora, which borders the United States.

“So far, eleven lifeless people have been reported, seven men and four women, in addition to four injured, who are being treated in hospitals in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora and the United States,” the Sonora prosecutor’s office said in a statement, according to the AFP news agency.

The public ministry reported that in the early hours of this Saturday a man threw an object with fire at the bar – presumably a Molotov cocktail – after being expelled from the place because “he was disrespecting women.”

The agency said it is working to identify and apprehend whoever was responsible for the fire.

“Investigations are ongoing to clarify the facts and establish the corresponding responsibilities,” the agency said.
