From the Uruguayan Banking Association (AEBU) questioned the project that proposes a solution for 2,500 debtors in UR del Hipotecary Banc, considering that to resolve the situation it is not necessary to merge the BHU with the Republic Bank (BROU).
The President of the Official Financial Sector Council of AEBU, María Eugenia Estoup, assured in dialogue with TV Ciudad that “attracts attention” that the initiative for some 2,500 families to stop paying and the one that would make the BROU absorb the BHU “they need different parliamentary majorities”.
In turn, he pointed out that “There is no statement of reasons in the bill” on the grounds and rejected the bill. “The BHU is within the public housing system”, He maintained when pointing out that it is “the financial leg of the public housing system”.
At that point, he considered that the mortgage loans would represent “10%” of those of BROU, which he described as “a bank that has commercial credits”, for which reason he questioned its ability.
Along the same lines, the press secretary Roberto Umpierrez assured that the BHU “has a National presence, since it shares offices with the ANV, present throughout the country.
They assure that the Mortgage Bank is solvent
When assessing the capacity of Banco Hipotecario, he maintained that “in recent times it has had a drop in the number of mortgage loans”, but he stressed: “It continues to be the main mortgage bank in the country, with the 49% of the market”. At the same time, he stressed that he does not have the monopoly of credit, but “is solvent and it gives Uruguayans a profit”, in line with what was stated by the president of the BHU, Casilda Echevarria.
Finally, consulted by a possible political intentionality of the government, Estoup argued that “there may be a will not come out”, while Umpiérrez recalled: “In fact it is what is happening, the minister (of Housing, Raúl) Lozano has already spoken out against of the merger”.
