In 1912 the municipal council decided to set up a museum in the Innerberger Stadel. The Heimathaus was opened on July 25, 1913. This year, the Steyr City Museum is celebrating its 110th birthday on Wednesday, July 26, with a “free day”.
“The lifeblood of every museum is the interest of its own population and of guests. A visit to our museum is always recommended,” says City Councilor Katrin Auer.
The 2021 state exhibition was an occasion to restore the Innerberger Stadel and to redesign the Heimathaus as a city museum. The history of the bourgeoisie, the importance of the iron trade for Steyr as well as interesting personalities and the Lamberg family are the focal points of the exhibition. Audio samples, videos and hands-on stations make the visit entertaining and varied. The audio guide, which is available in German and English and which you can download onto your cell phone free of charge, provides additional, more in-depth insights.
A special feature in the exhibition are the door knockers of Erich Hackl, agricultural consultant and passionate collector, who died in 1991. Throughout his life he collected around 300 door knockers, most of which came from barns and farms in the Steyr area. The ornamental design of the wrought iron objects is impressive.
With free admission, visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the “Eisenstadt” on July 26th. A special tour on the history of the museum is offered at 10.30 a.m. for those who are interested (costs: 5.50 euros per person).
