“You meet some here again and again, every year. It’s a very special audience – loyal, peaceful and very interested and, let’s say, very experienced. By the way, we were there at the first concert in 1993.” The Riedau couple are taking a break on the second day of the 38th Innône Jazz Festival in Paul Zauner’s tent at the Buchmannhof. The two express what many visitors feel here: a visit to the Innône is like coming home, like an annual meeting with friends – with always different music.
A world-class festival
Rohrbach, Linz, Freistadt, Steyr, Vienna, Graz, Sankt Pölten, Salzburg, Passau, Belgium, Holland, Deggendorf… – the license plates at the parking lot leave no doubt: the Innemon Festival is known far beyond the borders of Upper Austria. Hans Peter lives in Salzburg, but was born in Rieder. This is his first time at the festival in Diersbach. “An interesting experience, musically and in terms of the venue,” he says, impressed by the atmosphere that prevails on the open-air meadow and in the courtyard of the farm. “It’s touching how people sit here on the meadow, eat and drink and listen to the music,” he says.
“Touching” is what festival organizer Paul Zauner considers to be the essence of the choice of musicians. “I don’t read any specialist magazines, I rarely listen to the radio and don’t watch TV – when I put together the program for the festival, I rely on the recommendations of friends and acquaintances. They tell me what music has touched them, that’s what it’s all about, after all. That the guests are touched and touched…”
“Now I’ll sing a song without words, just with a voice,” says Jamaican Zara McFarlane, raising her powerful voice. She encourages the audience to sing along, and then the Inntune guests become part of the festival.
Enjoy with all your senses
The organic chickens are stewing on the rotary grill, the trout are cooking in front of it, the beer from Bavaria and Austria flows cool and fresh from the taps. Inside the Saint Pig’s Pub, the well-coordinated Valdobbiadene Jazz Ensemble is playing, outside on the open-air stage it’s a break. At least for the musicians. In addition, Frisbee and badminton are played, dozed, discussed, cuddled and just looked at the evening sun.
As the sun goes down, Hans Peter follows the concert of the Norwegian saxophonist Mette Henriette with her ensemble. They are spherical sounds, interpreted in an unusual and very idiosyncratic way. “What do you think she means by that?” he asks. A good question. Certainly her good feeling.
