The ex-president Jose Mujica assured yesterday that in the elections held on Sunday in Spain there was a clear “winner” who was the current head of government of that country, the socialist Pedro Sanchez.

“It had been reported internationally, and also in the polls, that there was going to be an overwhelming victory for the People’s Party (PP, conservative) and it was not like that”, reflected the leader of the Broad Front (FA). “There was a winner who was Sánchez who made the decision in the face of some partial results in the governorships to advance the electoral process, and he gambled,” Argentine radio Splendid AM 990 analyzed in dialogue.

Mujica explained “the paradoxWhat can happen in parliamentary regimes such as that of Spain where the party that gets the most votes in a national election is not necessarily the one that manages to stay in power. “In Spain, a president or a prime minister is not elected. A Parliament who is the one who decides who is the prime minister. It is the difference between a parliamentary regime and a presidential regime,” he said.

And he compared that system with the one applied in Latin American countries where “a president is directly elected in national elections.” “In parliamentary systems, the prime minister is chosen by the votes that are in Parliament. This produces the paradox that there may be a party that can have the largest number of votes but fails to have the majority of votes in Parliament, which is the one that decides,” he added.

Referring to the specific case of Spain, Jose Mujica pointed out that a party such as the Popular Party can have a tight majority in an election, but it does not have the number of legislators necessary to elect the prime minister.”

“Who comes second, the PSOEit would seem that by decision of the smaller parties he can achieve it,” reflected the former president.

In another order, the FA reference highlighted the unity photo that was taken with other former presidents of his country as Julio Maria Sanguinetti, Luis Alberto Lacalle and the current president Luis Lacalle Pou.

“We have noticeable differences but we are aware of a ‘we.’
