After various behavioral studies with adolescents and adults had already shown positive effects of breastfeeding on brain development, neurologists in the USA have now demonstrated the effect on 133 children between the ages of ten months and four years, partly directly using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and partly indirectly using cognition tests.
However, it has not yet been extensively investigated why breast milk has such an optimal effect and how exactly the components affect child development.
A secret probably lies in their complex and dynamic composition, which – depending on the need – changes automatically again and again. However, the new findings could already help to make industrially produced baby milk even more similar to breast milk.
